Grow Inferencing Skills With this Engaging Inferencing Detective Board Game - Perfect for Small Group or Stations

From my experience, inferencing is one of those comprehension strategies that is hard to grasp and can sometimes be difficult to teach. That’s why I came up with this Inferencing Detective board game, so my students can practice this skill in a fun way! You can use it for tutoring, small groups, guided reading, stations/centers, or even for a game day with your whole class.

All you need is a printer and some sort of tokens for game pieces, and you’re all set!

Why should I download this resource?

🔎It’s easy to set up

Print, cut, laminate (if desired - though I would recommend), and you’re good to go!

No tokens? Use different-colored pencil caps or even cute little erasers. I purchased my tokens from Amazon, but that is totally up to you. No brads for the spinner? Put a paperclip around the tip of a pencil and spin it that way! I did this with my students and it worked perfectly fine.

🔎It’s engaging

My students LOVED playing this game during tutoring. It had been a long day at school and I could sense they were unwilling to be there that day. Lucky me, we were scheduled to talk about inferencing that day so I just used this resource!

🔎It will help students articulate their thinking

One of my lower babies played this game with me and WOW was I impressed! They had never really understood inferencing very well before, but using the cards and their mixture of pictures and paragraphs, as well as great conversation between the group we were playing with had him making amazing inferences in no time.

🔎Teaches process of elimination

If you teach your students to get rid of the silly answers first, you can take this as a great opportunity to build these question-answering skills.

🔎Builds classroom community

This game will get students laughing and having fun with some friendly competition. If you set solid expectations on behavior, it will be a great experience to have fun with their peers.

🔎Helps students justify answers

As long as you teach your students to explain WHY they think what they think, they will be practicing this super important skill. I tell my students, “If you don’t know WHY you chose the answer, then maybe you need to come back to this one later.”
